Mental Karate Survivor Mindset

Here is the difference between the thoughts of the person who gives up and the person who doesn’t give up. Below, please find two examples.

Person who gives up   Person who doesn’t give up
This problem is permanent.   This problem is temporary.
This problem affects all aspects of my life.   This problem affects a limited part of my life.

In summary, the person who gives up thinks: this problem lasts forever, it ruins everything. The person who doesn’t give up thinks: this problem will not last forever, there are still many other great things in life that I can focus on. The other thing that the person who doesn’t give up does is they don’t blame themselves too much or get too down on themselves.

Example 1: Your girlfriend breaks up with you
Person who gives up   Person who doesn’t give up
This problem is permanent: I’ll never find another girl or be happy again. This messes up my life FOREVER.   This problem is temporary: Even though this stinks now and I’m in a lot of pain, I’ll eventually move on and forget about this girl.
This problem affects all aspects of my life: Everyone at school knows I got dumped and I’m a loser; I can’t ever hang out with all our old friends; I’ll probably never find a wife and have kids.   This problem affects a limited part of my life: I can still have fun with my friends, with my family; I can still enjoy sports; I can still do other things I like.

Example 2: You struggle in math class, even after working hard
Person who gives up   Person who doesn’t give up
This problem is permanent: I’ll never do well in any math class—I’m going to suffer forever.   This problem is temporary: Maybe if I work harder and get extra help I can do better next time.
This problem affects all aspects of my life: Because I stink at math, I will not get into any good colleges, and my life is ruined.   This problem affects a limited part of my life: Math is just one part of my academic performance. I can still perform well in my other classes and colleges will appreciate all the other things I offer.
